Factors that Cause Dementia to Progress Quickly

Dementia is a progressive condition that worsens over time causing a serious decline in memory, behaviour, and thinking. The speed at which it progresses depends on various factors, such as the patient’s age, general health, underlying diseases, etc. Although the progression of dementia is typically slow and gradual, in some cases, it can progress quickly and even prove to be fatal if not managed with proper dementia home care and medical assistance.

What causes dementia to progress quickly?

Several factors result in a quick progression of dementia, such as:

Age

Dementia tends to progress more quickly in younger people (below 65 years) than in older people (above 65 years). Moreover, research shows that people who develop dementia between the ages of 30 and 50 appear to live 2 years less than those who are diagnosed with dementia in the later years of their life.

Delirium

Delirium is a medical condition characterised by a state of confusion which comes on suddenly. It may occur as a result of an underlying physical cause, such as:

  • Infections – These are one of the most common causes of delirium. People who are diagnosed with dementia are especially at risk for UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections).
  • Medication withdrawal – This is another major cause of delirium. So, if someone with dementia suddenly starts or stops a medication, they may develop delirium that could further cause their dementia symptoms to progress quickly.
  • Anaesthesia and surgery – Physical demands of a medical procedure can also cause delirium. Sometimes, delirium persists even after the patient is discharged from the hospital.

In the advanced stages of dementia, the patient may even develop delirium due to minor health issues, such as dehydration, constipation, lack of sleep, etc. That’s when they can benefit from dementia home care, which may include the assistance they need to manage these minor issues successfully.

Other health issues

Dementia is more likely to progress quickly if the patient also has other long-term health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. With dementia, it’s common for people to forget to take their medication on time, miss doctor’s appointments, or have the right diet to manage their health problems. Through reliable dementia home care, it is however possible to manage all of these.

Change in daily routine

People living with dementia usually see their routine as a source of comfort. When they have a routine, they know what to expect or look forward to every day. A sudden change or disruption in their routine may therefore worsen their dementia symptoms. This could be especially true if the patient is stressed.

While some people may need support soon after the diagnosis of dementia, others may remain independent for many years. However, with the right level of dementia home care from trained caregivers, a person with dementia can keep their physical and mental abilities for a long time regardless of the pattern of their dementia progression.
