How Home-Care can help you during a pandemic!

If you’re weighing up your plans for care going forward in this new pandemic driven world we have found ourselves in; you might be interested in these reasons why choosing home-care is better than entering yourself or a loved one into a care-home.

I understand that it’s obviously a very complicated and difficult decision to make and that everybody’s circumstances are different and other care arrangements will be beneficial in their own way; I just wanted to offer some food for thought about home care and how it can help people during a pandemic!

1. Self-isolation is much more manageable

It’s no secret that care homes have been hit unbelievably hard by Coronavirus. Firstly, I want to say that we at HoneyBee HomeCare feel great sympathy for all care homes that have suffered throughout these unprecedented times. The workforce in the homes and all front-line workers have done tremendous work in battling this virus.

I can say with absolute certainty, we at HoneyBee HomeCare have kept all of our clients absolutely safe from COVID-19. Through using proper PPE, sanitising and handwashing regularly and taking all of the proper precautions and then some; we have had absolute success in keeping everybody safe!

People in their own homes are much more able to avoid this virus simply because they have their own space and minimal people passing through their home. Care homes are usually full of residents who are more susceptible to Coronavirus due to their age and health conditions, this isn’t helped by the need for a full staff of carers which are essential to the population of each care home to assist their residents as usual. As safely and thoroughly as the carers in these homes work, the risk of a virus spreading quickly is elevated regardless of the safe practices that are in place.

Home care, especially the practices that we use has proven to be much safer. Regardless of a pandemic, we employ a ‘Primary carer/Secondary carer’ system where there is a minimal rotation of carers in any given client’s home. This minimises the chance of the virus entering a clients home significantly. it also promotes a positive carer-client relationship – also it allows our carers to more closely monitor any changes in our clients’ health and well-being.

2. Private supply of PPE

We always give our carers their own  “carer bag”, supplied with disposable gloves, aprons, face masks, shoe covers, a 400ml bottle of hand sanitiser, a notepad & pen and a 3d printed visor. This kit is for each carer so A. we don’t have to clutter our clients’ homes with PPE and B. our carers don’t have to share PPE. We did this anyway but it certainly helps during these times as there is definitely less hands on each container of gloves, masks, etc.

3. Enjoy your own space

At the moment, residents in care homes probably aren’t feeling very enthusiastic about heading out into communal areas, which means that they could find themselves confining themselves to their rooms.

Fortunately for our clients, they are living in their own homes where they have multiple rooms to themselves. Although they (like us) are restricted on how much they can go outside and what they can do, at least they can enjoy the comfort of having more space. With a lock-down in place, it’s certainly more relaxing being in a home that you have lovingly put together yourself, surrounded with all of your own precious possessions.

I think until now, a lot of people took the amount of room they had in their homes for granted, being stuck (mostly) in one room for prolonged periods of time can’t be healthy for you.

4. Comfort in company

Up until recently, the public weren’t allowed to have visitors in their home; government guidance is still suggesting that people over a certain age should still isolate themselves and make sure they avoid visitors. Throughout lockdown, clients of home-care companies have been able to enjoy the company of the carers that are visiting them on a regular basis and have a catch up.

If you follow us online, you will see how much we like to talk about how lovely our carers are, some of our clients have truly found great comfort in our friendly faces popping in and making their lives happier, healthier and easier.
